WWF Warzone: Review

The first of Acclaim's 3D wrestling games, which was also the first to feature Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock as playable wrestlers. There are a solid variety of modes and match types as well as a simple create-a-wrestler, but the fatal flaws of War Zone are its core mechanics. First off, the controls are reliant on fighting game-esque button combinations for grapple moves and finishers, which is considerably more responsive than it is in WCW Nitro or WCW/nWo Thunder, but is still not a great control scheme for a wrestling game. The other fatal flaw is the stun meter and how it makes it difficult to keep an opponent down outside of specific intervals, especially when you pull off your finisher and they practically no-sell your supposedly devastating move by getting back up. There is a sort of career mode which is loaded with cheesy FMVs (Ahmed Johnson has some especially infamous scenes here) which are easily some of the best parts of the game. Overall, Warzone was decent for the time, but unless you had fond memories playing this or Attitude, I would avoid them and play THQ's Smackdown! games instead.
