Sonic The Hedgehog 2: Review

Sonic Hedgehog 2 is that classic run-and-jump as you collect coins title that is still as much fun as it was when it went live in 1992. Released on the Sega Genesis, the game plays with your mind by giving you a brightly colored backdrop upon which your hedgehog runs gathering coins and merrily skipping over obstacles.

Graphics

The most captivating thing about 2D running games is that their graphics can easily be made phenomenal without creating a memory-sapping application. This means that the vivid backgrounds, animated flowers and shimmering lakes that had everyone in awe over 25 years ago are still decent enough by modern standards. Couple this with the lively soundtrack and you get a game that gives you more than you actually expected graphics-wise.

Gameplay

You’ll play Sonic in the game, and you will have to make your way through a number of side-scrolling levels as you roll through enemies, turbo launch and jump past hazards, collecting valuables along the way. At the very end of any level, you’ll have to compete against Dr. Eggman’s inventions and win.

There are power-up boxes that give you shields or speed while gold rings give you access to bonus stages or even give you the power to survive any collision with hazards.

Even though this sounds simple, the fact that the Sonic 2 Sega Genesis levels are longer and increasingly hard the more you play means that each new run will never be the same as the previous one. You have 20 crazy fun levels to explore, and your decisions will determine which of the multiple endings you will see once you clear the game. Couple this with the fact that you can set the game to a VS mode and you get a solid piece that is fun to individuals or family.

Controls

Controls in this 2D run game are easy. You can roll, slide or jump. That’s pretty much all there is to the game. However, it is the speed at which the obstacles keep coming and how fast you have to react that make the game interesting. With so little to do, you won’t have to worry about controls; you will be struggling to hit the right move combinations that will keep Sonic The Hedgehog 2 alive at all costs.

Lasting Appeal

Sonic 2 has all the aspects of a long-lasting game. It is fun, it gives you a chance to compete with other people, and it is a classic title that looks good enough to captivate even the young gamers who are all about graphics and complex storylines. The multiple endings possibilities and the quest to hit an even higher score will keep you on your toes at all times.

The Verdict

The Sega Genesis is an iconic gaming platform that retains its appeal among classic gamers. With Sonic 2 being one of the most successful games on the platform, it isn’t hard to see why it will definitely be a good play. Your focus is all on the obstacles and getting to the next level as you vault and duck them in the vivid 2D world. The desire to run longer, gather more and beat high scores will keep you wanting to play more and more.
